On Tuesday, August 18, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency as wildfires spread across California. According to Cal Fire, more than 1.4 million acres have burned, 200,000 people been under evacuation orders at various times, 2,500 structures have been destroyed and millions are breathing smoky air. Wildfires, while a natural occurrence, have become more frequent and intense in recent years, thriving on high heat, low humidity and strong winds caused by climate change. In addition, California continues to be a hot spot for COVID-19 cases, further complicating evacuation and relief efforts. Changing the way our world is powered by harnessing the benefits of solar is a huge step toward mitigating the negative impact of global warming. But, as a community, we can do more. And our help is needed now. SunPower Foundation has established the 2020 $50K Solar Community Challenge to support California communities impacted by these fires. This Fund includes vetted nonprofits providing emergency response in the region. Through a single donation, dealers can support multiple organizations that provide both provide short-term relief and long-term recovery.

California Wildfires (Butte, Los Angeles, and Ventura Counties) - November 2018 Dropbox created the California Wildfires Relief Fund in response to the three massive wildfires in Northern and Southern California. We support the many first responders who continue to fight these fires, evacuate communities, and save lives across the state. The composition of nonprofits is subject to change as we learn more about the needs on the ground.

The Camp Fire, which erupted in Northern California on Thursday, has killed at least 63 people, with 600 people still missing, and burned through 117,000 acres of land. Already the most destructive fire in the state’s history, it remained just 30 percent contained as of Monday night. The Woolsey Fire outside Los Angeles, which started Thursday and doubled in size overnight, has killed two people and burned nearly 100,000 acres. Both fires prompted the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people, some not realizing how dangerous the fires had become until flames arrived at their doorsteps. The Hill Fire, which destroyed 4,500 acres in Ventura County, was 85 percent contained on Monday, the result of aggressive firefighting and favorable weather conditions.

The 2021 wildfire season is shaping up to be another terrible one in California and the Western United States. In California, three of the 2021 fires (Dixie, Caldor, and Monument) are already on Cal Fire’s top 20 largest California Wildfires list since 1932 (by acreage burned), with five of the top 7 largest fires claimed by 2020 fires. Startling images of the Dixie Fire’s total destruction of the entire town of Greenville or of firefighters riding ski chairlifts to prevent the Caldor Fire from cresting the ridge at Kirkwood Mountain Resort put these statistics into sharp focus. The organizations in this fund were researched and chosen to provide boots-on-the-ground support during and in the aftermath of wildfires to meet the short, medium, and long-term needs of impacted people.
